Career Spotlight: Sacha Melki, A&R at Monstercat
Today’s Career Spotlight we feature Sacha Melki, A&R at Monstercat. If you are looking for work in the industry, be sure to check out all open positions here.
Who are you and what is your background?
I’m Sacha Melki, 21 years old, born in France and moved to Montreal 10 years ago. I just recently moved to Vancouver.
How did you get to where you are now?
I got very fortunate. Saw that Monstercat followed me on Twitter and contacted them right away. From there, kept a good relationship with Mike Darlington (CEO of Monstercat) over Skype, which led to me, being an A&R for this amazing company.
When did you realize that you wanted a career in the music industry?
Working in the music industry was something I always dreamed about but never really saw it possible. I studied in marketing and was expecting to get a job in the advertising industry till I got followed by Monstercat.
You started out as @sachavibes on Twitter and by actually following all of your fans you grew to over 85k followers. How did this all start?
I’ve always loved sharing music to my friends and getting feedback. Knowing peoples opinion on tracks is something that has always excited me, especially when they love the track and go nuts to it. I wanted (and still do) to share this music and passion for it to the max amount of people I could. I thought Twitter was the best way to do so. It’s been so much fun since then (for over 2 years now).
By creating such a huge following on Twitter you were given a chance at your dream job with Monstercat at the end of November. What does you’re A&R position at Monstercat entail?
I don’t think I got the job for the amount of followers I have on Twitter but the amount of songs I’ve been sharing for so long. I deal with artists that want to get on Monstercat and my job is to bring new good and creative talent to the label. It’s been a blast so far.
What are your favorite aspects of your jobs?
So many but I’ll keep it short. All my coworkers are honestly awesome. I became friends with most of them, and it’s great to work in such a friendly and cool environment. Making friends with artists you’ve been a fan of for so long is also a pretty cool aspect of my job.
What is your least favorite aspect?
The only least favorite aspect of my job is to be far from girlfriend, family, and friends who are all in Montreal. That’s pretty much the only thing I can think about when thinking of a least favorite aspect of my job… my job itself is awesome.
Is there anything you do for work on a daily basis others might be surprised about?
All my coworkers including myself do more than what they got hired for. We work as a team to make this company the best it can be. Nothing is really surprising but I guess something I do for Monstercat that you wouldn’t think of is updating our Spotify playlists.
Is working in the music industry as cut-throat and challenging as many people make it out to be?
Depends what you’re doing. Some have it easier than others. Working in the music industry is always challenging if you’re looking to evolve.
If you could change one part about the work you do, what would it be?
Nothing. The job itself? Nothing. The only thing I’d like of a change is having my girlfriend here, but that does not really relate to my job, just my life in Vancouver.
Do you have any advice for those trying to find a career path in the music realm?
I think success comes with passion. Once you have passion, perseverance and determination is easy, since it is what you love; and this comes for everything in life in my opinion.
Is there anything you do outside of work that people might be surprised about?
I cook… maybe it’s not surprising to you, but it definitely is to me!!!
Is there anything else you would like to add? Tips, thoughts, feelings, songs, etc?
Artists:
ATTLAS,Loosid, Conro, Nitro Fun, Tristam, Eminence, Fractal, Protostar, Aero Chord, Haywyre
Tips: Do it with passion or don’t do it at all 🙂
